Freelance Software Engineer · Berlin · On-site & Remote

Rust, from the cloud to the bare metal — engineered to stay up.

15+ years of turning hard systems problems into reliable, maintainable software. A decade in Python and big-data ML, then six years deep in Rust — backends, desktop, and embedded firmware alike. Available as a freelance engineer, on-site in Berlin or remote.

01 / FOCUS

Three channels

Like a three-component seismometer, the work resolves onto three axes — each recorded on its own channel.

CH·Z — RUSTvertical

Backend to bare metal

One language, from the cloud down to the silicon. Async backends with tokio, serde and tracing; cross-platform apps with tauri; and embedded firmware on ARM Cortex, ESP32 and RP2040 — where borrowing, lifetimes and tight resource budgets are the whole game.

Cloud & DevOps

I automate as much of the delivery lifecycle as I can — reproducible builds, CI/CD, containerised deploys and observability — with security treated as a first-class concern, not a checkbox. Releases get boring, and problems surface before your users find them.

Freelancing

A senior engineer who scopes honestly, communicates plainly and ships — on-site in Berlin or fully remote. I lean on Claude Code to move fast, and on fifteen years of experience to steer architecture and make the calls that matter. In four languages.

seismiq GmbH — earthquake-preparedness sensors

Co-founded in 2018; I lead development of a new sensor system for earthquake preparedness that pairs edge computing with on-device AI — from the embedded firmware on the metal up to the analytics that make sense of the signal.

Data-driven earthquake detection at scale: convolutional networks over large seismic datasets with TensorFlow and Keras, tuned for precision and speed. Where the systems mindset — signal, noise, detection — and the seismiq name both come from.

03 / APPROACH

How I work

The engineering principles a client is actually buying when they bring me in.

A—01

Safety & security first

Rust's guarantees plus a habit of treating security as a first-class concern — correctness and failure modes before features, so what you ship keeps working when no one's watching it.

A—02

Clean, maintainable code

Code is read far more than it's written. I optimise for the engineer who inherits it — clear structure, honest names, and tests that document intent as much as they catch bugs.

A—03

Automate everything

I automate as much of the development lifecycle as I can — builds, tests, deploys, observability — so the boring parts stay boring and a release stops being an event.

A—04

AI-accelerated, human-steered

I use Claude Code to move fast, and fifteen years of experience to steer architecture, review what comes out, and make the design decisions that don't come from a prompt.

04 / ABOUT

I'm Marius — a Berlin-based software engineer, working with clients both on-site and remote. I spent over a decade with Python, including a PhD building big-data analytics with TensorFlow and Keras, before moving to Rust about six years ago — and haven't looked back.

In 2018 I co-founded seismiq GmbH, where I lead development of an earthquake-preparedness sensor system that pairs edge computing with AI. Building that close to the metal — ARM Cortex, ESP32, RP2040 — sharpened exactly what makes Rust worth it: borrowing, lifetimes, and writing efficient code for hardware that gives you nothing to spare.

As a freelancer I bring that full range: Rust from cloud backends down to firmware, strong DevOps, security as a first-class concern, and a habit of automating everything I can. I use Claude Code to move fast, and my experience to steer the architecture and make sound design decisions. I'd love to chat — let's get in touch.

Got a system that needs to be right — from the cloud to the metal?

Tell me about the project, the constraints and the deadline. I'll tell you honestly whether I'm the right fit — and if so, how I'd approach it. I'd love to chat.
